Acknowledgment Lifts the Spirits

I would like to say thanks to a young cyclist, who in 15 seconds, changed my mindset from negative to positive.

I was halfway through my morning run and feeling energy depleted as I looked up the long hill climb in front of me. My mind switched to how hard this will be. That I was tired. Maybe take it easy.

Until a cyclist on her way to work said, “Pick me up if you find me lying horizontal. This is my first ride for the season”, which was a welcome distraction, but it was what she said next that was the lifter, “Looks like you are just cruising, most probably pass me in fact.”

And with a smile I replied, “I am feeling good and will help where I can.”

She slowly rode off up the hill.

A simple positive acknowledgement of my efforts lifted my spirits to engage with the hill and conquer the activity. It only takes a comment of encouragement, an act of acknowledgement that can change someone’s mindset.

I would put this act in the Random Act of Kindness basket. Unbeknown to the young cyclist, she helped an old runner change his mindset from pain to gain.

When have you been lifted with positive words of acknowledgement?
