I love sport. But let me shatter that picture you may have of me spending my weekends on the couch switching codes on the KAYO remote. I am not an avid watcher of sport; in fact, I watch very little and would be a liability at a Sports Quiz night.
The part I love about sport is the celebration that goes into every goal or play to get goal.
Where in your work environment have you performed a back flip in celebration because the students excelled / progressed in NAPLAN numeracy? Or maybe fist punched the air while your fellow educators piled on top in celebration of a well-prepared lesson that produced a class “light bulb” moment?
Yet in sport, the spectators cheer the players on and relish the outlandish but creative physical celebrations that players display. I am not promoting the “stacks on the mill” type of festivity, however I am all for recognising the great teaching and learning moments you have every day. And what better place to start with than in the classroom.
Here are five ways you can pay homage to your craft.
1. High five the students as they leave for recess after a taxing but break through morning session.
2. Ask for a standing ovation for the classes’ effort in quick transition for the next lesson.
3. In the last 3 minutes before school finishes, articulate your genuine moments of joy of the day.
4. Show open emotion with a fist pump when an unassuming student displays their potential talent.
5. Recognise with a round of applause, the students who did well in an assessment, showed the right behaviour or worked as a team.
There is plenty to celebrate in education every day, we just need to know the goals and be prepared to celebrate.
How are you going to celebrate your classroom goals?
