In our family birthdays are celebrated as a festival. We have small events rather than one large gathering. This way the birthday person can take time to have those meaningful conversations we all wish we had, during reflection of the large birthday parties.
So, this week I was the central figure and gathered up the family to spend a few days in the Dunsborough area.
One of the many activities was to go on a coastal walk from Shelly Beach to Cape Naturalist. This was unplanned. The idea only arose as son three said he hadn’t seen the Pirate Cave which is situated on said coastal walk.
This idea ticked all the boxes. Movement. Nature. Company.
Halfway through the journey we stopped to admire a seal colony basking in the
sun on the rocks and playing in the lagoon while a whale was breeching in the
background. Nature is so full of surprises and so rich with life.
No more than 200 metres down the track, we came across an anonymous balancing stones tower. It reminded me of what we were doing and why we do it.
We were all removed from our daily lives. We were embracing the awe of nature. We were creating memories. We were sharing experiences. We were balancing our lives between life admin, work commitments, daily routines and recharging the soul.
It doesn’t have to be a birthday celebration to remove yourself from the world we are defined by, to embrace the easy and natural things in life that give us so much joy.
The holidays are just days away so try to resist filling them with more planned events that have an element of structure.
Balance structure and spontaneity that recharge the batteries - Movement,
Nature and Company.
Don’t forget your balance.
Enjoy your well-deserved rest.
P.S. We didn’t make it to the Pirate Cave due to the weather, but it is not about the destination it is about the journey.
