I recently finished reading Earl Nightingale’s 1950 best seller “The Strangest Secret.”
The origins of the book are as unique as the secret. Earl owned an insurance company and knew sales were the source of future financial gain which meant he was at the mercy of his sales team to perform.
So, to motivate the sales team to succeed, Earl created weekly inspirational and motivational success speeches to be played to the sales force in Earls absence. Theoretically, Earl was the first podcaster.
The book is a compilation of these pearls of wisdom that are still applicable today. There are many nuggets of gold in the easy to read 116-page book, complete with quotes, mantras and explanations.
The one I felt was pertinent to leaders and culture is,
“The human mind is the last great unexplored continent on earth.”
We underestimate the power of setting a goal and working towards achievement knowing that sacrifice and pain must be endured to reach success.
Being a Courageous Leader is enhancing the greater belief and conviction for the pathway towards the outcome. Utilising the mind to overcome adversity and criticism from others who resist the change to a better future.
The Strangest Secret is not one action, but the culmination of many. However, the starting point to implement the series of mantras is: “Plant your goal in your mind'. Picture yourself in your mind’s eye as having already achieved this goal.”
Schools are preparing for 2024. Whatever the course of action you are taking, picture the outcome.
What will success look like?
What are the outcomes that will prove the work was worth it?
And above all, make the goals simple to explain and understand with clear expectations that paint the picture of success.
Earl Nightingale motivations are still pertinent today as yesterday.
Are you motivating your staff with clear goals and expectations?
